Newcastle United’s win-less run stretched to five games after they drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion.

Rafael Benitez’s side ended a run of four consecutive defeats with their comeback at the Hawthorns, however the result means they’ve won just one of their last nine league games.

Their away form is particularly concerning, they’ve won just once on the road this season and after a steady start to the campaign, things don’t quite look as secure as they did a month ago.

Newcastle are bottom of the form table if you take into account the last five games, which doesn’t make good reading but it could trigger something which may help turn the tide.

Prior to the Albion game, Benitez claimed that Newcastle ‘couldn’t compete’ with the likes of Burnley and Huddersfield Town due to the transfer fees and wages thy were offering as reported in the Newcastle Chronicle.

Newcastle’s next match is at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea. Defeat could see them drop closer to the bottom three and that panic may trigger the board to give Benitez more transfer funds which his rant seemed to be hinting towards.

Back in the summer, Benitez spent £5m to bring Joselu to Tynside. The Spanish striker has scored just twice this season and Magpies fans are questioning why he continues to get selected. That could also be another message to the board suggesting that £5m isn’t enough to get a Premier League quality striker who’s going to score regularly.

Regardless as to whether the club’s sale is completed by January, Benitez needs to revamp a squad which has proven to be thin after recent injuries and recent results could be the wake up call the board have needed to give Benitez the signings he’s needed since the summer.
