Tottenham Hotspur have been said to be considering selling Toby Alderweireld in January.

Tottenham Hotspur should keep hold of Toby Alderweireld for another season, before letting him go.
However, Spurs may be better off keeping him around and then taking up the year option on his contract at the end of next term.
By activating the extension to Alderweireld’s contract, Spurs would have to sell the centre-back for a fee of £25 million, due to a clause in his current deal.

However, that would not be a bad move at all for Spurs, considering the defender’s age.
Alderweireld will be 30-years-old next season, and have little re-sale value, so a deal for £25 million would still be an impressive transfer for Tottenham.
Added to that, Spurs would have a year longer with arguably the best defender in the Premier League in their squad.
Tottenham have suggested that they will be able to cope without Alderweireld, but if he does move on their squad will be weaker.

It is almost impossible for Tottenham to find a replacement on the same level of Alderweireld, with their restrictive wage structure.
And Mauricio Pochettino should seriously consider keeping Alderweireld around for another season, and then selling for £25 million next term, rather than losing him in the summer, as he could be so vital for Tottenham’s progress.
