West Ham United decided to loan out Josh Cullen to Charlton Athletic yesterday.
The writing may be on the wall for Josh Cullen’s career at West Ham United, after his latest step back.
Cullen has just been loaned out to Charlton Athletic in League One by West Ham, which takes him down a division from what he was playing in last year.
Cullen spent last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers, but never really became a first-team regular in the Championship.
The central midfielder, instead, has gone back to League One where he has previously excelled.
The move to Charlton should certainly help Cullen develop, but there must be question marks over whether he will ever make it at West Ham.
Cullen is now 22, and even though he is a talent, he is reaching a stage where he needs to find a permanent home.
Cullen simply hasn’t proven himself at any level higher than League One throughout his career to date, and when he returns to West Ham he will be 23.
Cullen will surely have to have a remarkable season to have any chance of forcing his way into West Ham’s starting line-up for next term, and it may be that this loan move proves to be the beginning of the end of the Irish youth international at the London Stadium.
