Celtic manager’s European record is coming in for real scrutiny after another knockout exit.
Celtic crashed out of Europe last night after a 3-0 defeat to Zenit St Petersburg.
The Scottish champions were 1-0 up from the first leg but this was easily wiped out as Roberto Mancini’s Zenit stepped up their game on home turf.
It was a big disappointment for Celtic who have now been eliminated from two European competitions in one season.
After going unbeaten domestically in 206/17 fans wanted to see the team finally step up in Europe.
Admittedly the Champions League handed them a brutally tough draw against PSG and Bayern Munich in the group stages, but the manner of their losses was really concerning.
To top it off they limped into the Europa League after a home defeat to Anderlecht, hardly the most inspiring of group stages.
They were in position last night to qualify, travelling to Russia with a lead and no away goal against them.
Instead they capitulated and their wait for some sort of credibility in Europe goes on.
The same problem faces manager Brendan Rodgers, who failed at Liverpool too.
Fans are appreciative of what Rodgers has done at Celtic in a short space of time but his failure to move the club forward in Europe is a big frustration and he is not immune from criticism.
