With Nottingham Forest chasing a new winger, can Rangers boss Steven Gerrard now bring Barrie McKay back to Ibrox?

Barrie McKay of Rangers runs with the ball during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers were disappointed last year when the club cashed in on winger Barrie McKay.

Adored by the Ibrox fans since breaking through as a teenager, McKay fell foul of controversial former boss Pedro Caixinha, who sold him and was sacked months later.

McKay signed with Nottingham Forest and has had a mixed spell at the City Ground.

He has struggled for regular playing time under Aitor Karanka since he took over in January and now he could be replaced.

McKay made only four appearances under Karanka, and did not play the full 90 minutes in any of them.

The Mail report Forest are attempting to sign Benfica winger Diogo Goncalves on loan, and the Portugal under-21 international would be a terrific additon.

Goncalves arrival would make life even tougher for McKay, with both players’ preference being to play as a left winger.

This potentially opens the door for Rangers to try and bring back their prodigal son, and put right a wrong committed when the club sold him on.

McKay of course would have to battle for his place at Rangers with Jamie Murphy, but being back at his former club could inspire him to get back to his best.

Rangers have fresh hope with new manager Steven Gerrard, and McKay, just 23, has time on his side to fulfil his potential if he returns to Ibrox.
