Ian Wright was critical of Gabriel Jesus for the part he played in Arsenal winning a crucial and game-changing penalty during their 3-2 win over Liverpool in the Premier League at the Emirates on Sunday.

Arsenal were the better team throughout the match, including opening the scoring inside the first minute, before being pegged back on two occasions by Jurgen Klopp’s struggling men.

The second equaliser came via the boot of substitute Roberto Firmino and it seemed as though Liverpool, with their defence still all over the place, were going to get something out of the game.

But that’s when the game changed because Thiago Alcantara was punished for a supposed foul on Jesus in the penalty area, after Liverpool failed to clear the ball.

Thiago made contact with the bottom of Jesus’ boot, before he went to ground, but the question that has to be asked, was it enough for a penalty to be awarded?

Well, despite repping the colours of Arsenal, Wright certainly feels it was soft and he made it clear that he ‘wouldn’t be happy’ if it was against him, as he was critical of Jesus for the manner in which he went to ground, as he told Premier League Productions (09/10/22 at 6:35 pm).

“Arsenal played well throughout the game and Liverpool showed how dangerous they can be because they are a quality side,” said Wright. “I have to say, the penalty, if it was against me, then I wouldn’t be happy about it.

“At the end of the day, it’s what has decided the game.

“You know when they showed the magnified one (close up on Thiago making contact with Jesus’ boot)? Is that enough of a touch? He’s not falling over there! Is that enough to give a penalty?!”

ARE ARSENAL AND LIVERPOOL SWAPPING SEATS?

Manchester City have been the dominant team in English football ever since Pep Guardiola stepped foot into the Premier League.

That will probably continue this term with the goal-crazy Erling Haaland now part of an already lethal and fearless Man City forward line.

But it’s usually been Liverpool that have always been behind those from the Etihad. Is all of that about to change?

The gap between tenth-placed Liverpool and current leaders Arsenal is 14 points, and with Man City up next for the Reds, this can still get worse for those on Merseyside.
