Will Steven Gerrard reunite Rangers’ best defensive partnership?
Glasgow Rangers’ early season success came from a superb defensive partnership between Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson.
Thrown together seemingly at random, the pair looked like they had been playing together for years, proving instantly effective for Rangers.
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has veered away from that over the past few weeks, leaving Katic on the bench for recent games.
Joe Worrall has come in, and while it would be overstating it to say the Nottingham Forest loanee has been terrible, Rangers do not look the same without Katic at the back.
It is frustrating to see Gerrard breaking up a successful partnership, and it seems even more illogical that it is to accommodate a loanee, rather than looking at the bigger picture.
Rangers have a chance to freshen up the side this weekend when they face St Mirren, yet it’s unclear if Katic will get a recall.
Rangers needed to play Worrall at some point, that was the reason they signed him. What wasn’t ideal was not reverting to their best partnership for the cup semi-final.
This continued against Kilmarnock this week, with Gerrard doubling down on his team selection.
Katic’s return should be inevitable at this point. The question is when Gerrard will admit his mistake and recall the Croatian?
