Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is reportedly trying to take another towering defender to Ibrox.

Jake Cooper of Millwall celebrates after scoring his sides second goal during the Sky Bet League One match between Millwall and Port Vale at The Den on February 14, 2017 in London, England.

Bruno Alves looks set to leave Rangers, but has Steven Gerrard already identified his replacement?

According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers boss Gerrard is keen on signing Millwall centre-back Jake Cooper, with the Gers willing to pay around £1.5 million.

Cooper stands at 6’5 [Transfermarkt] and if he arrives then it’s clear that Gerrard is targeting powerhouse defenders, considering that Nikola Katic [6’4] and Connor Goldson [6’3] have been signed.

But should that worry fans of the Ibrox club?

Jake Cooper of Millwall celebrates scoring a goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Hull City and Millwall FC at KCOM Stadium on March 6, 2018 in Hull, England.

There is nothing wrong with boasting tall centre-backs, but defenders of that ilk aren’t exactly known for their mobility and Gerrard could be getting the balance wrong if he signs another imposing figure.

Rangers’ have a disastrous record in Old Firm derbies since returning to the Premiership two years ago, and is a back-three of Cooper, Goldson and Katic going to thwart Celtic’s attacking force?

Gerrard is obviously going for something different so far, but different doesn’t always mean good and time will tell whether packing the defence with towering figures is a big gaffe or a masterstroke.
