When compared to Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois and David de Gea of Manchester United, is Spurs captain Hugo Lloris on the same level?
With Tottenham Hotspur running out 3-1 winners against Chelsea and securing their first victory at Stamford Bridge in 28 years, there was little attention paid to Hugo Lloris’ mistake at the weekend.
The Blues actually went ahead in the game when Lloris misjudged a Victor Moses cross to allow Alvaro Morata to head in, but a Dele Alli double and Christian Eriksen strike covered for the Frenchman’s error.
Yet that was not the first time this season the Spurs captain has made a mistake directly leading to a goal. In fact it was the goalkeeper’s fourth, with only Arsenal’s Petr Cech (6) and Asmir Begovic of Bournemouth (5) having made more in the Premier League in 2017/18.
Lloris overrated?
The 31-year-old has long been named among the best stoppers in the division, but is that actually still the case when compared to Thibaut Courtois, David De Gea and even Ederson?
Many have argued that the likes of Mousa Dembele, Heung-min Son and even Alli don’t get enough credit, while Eriksen, Harry Kane and Jan Vertonghen justifiably get praise heaped on them.
Yet is all this diverting attention from the fact that Lloris no longer looks like he has the confidence from when the ‘keeper first arrived from Lyon and that in comparison to the aforementioned trio, the France skipper is just no longer on the same level?
