Scottish Premiership champions Celtic look set to sell defender Erik Sviatchenko -12 months after he was linked with Premier League outfit Southampton.
It could be a case of one in one out for Celtic in January. According to German publication Sportbuzzer, RB Leipzig centre-back Marvin Compper is set to undergo a medical on Monday ahead of a £900,000 move to Parkhead.
And he could take the place of Erik Sviatchenko, whose immediate future in the green half of Glasgow looks increasingly unclear.
According to the Scottish Sun, Celtic are open to offers for the Danish defender despite refusing to consider selling him during the summer. It is understood that FC Copenhagen had a £2.7 million bid rejected – but The Hoops may now reconsider approaches with Sviatchenko falling down the pecking order.
He is behind Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic at Celtic and has not even made a single league appearance in 2017/18 – though that is partly down to injury.
The question, however, is where the 26-year-old would go if leaving Celtic in January. Well, it’s not particularly rare to swap Glasgow for the South Coast with Fraser Forster, Victor Wanyama and Virgil Van Dijk leaving Celtic for Southampton in recent years.
The Sun claimed in the January 2017 transfer window that The Saints were hoping to raid Parkhead again for Sviatchenko. And, one year on, they may be tempted to revisit that deal with Celtic looking to sell.
With Van Dijk’s future still unclear, and his form nowhere like the levels of last season, The Saints may be interested in defensive reinforcements. Summer signing Wesley Hoedt, too, is yet to convince on a regular basis.
