Schalke out of the race but PSG are reportedly still interested in Danny Rose – so should Spurs sell even though they can’t sign a replacement?

Danny Rose could still leave Tottenham Hotspur before the end of the month, with the Mirror reporting Paris Saint-Germain remain interested in the left-back.

Schalke had also discussed the prospect of signing Rose, but with only £6.24m to spend and no interest in loans, they do not have the funds to land the £50m-rated defender – as reported by Sky Sports.

That is not such a problem for mega-rich PSG and even though they can’t sign a replacement, Spurs are open to the prospect of selling the 28-year-old.

Backup options

Ben Davies is now manager Mauricio Pochettino’s first choice on the left side of defence and apparently, if Rose is sold, the Argentine is prepared to use either Kyle Walker-Peters or Jan Vertonghen when the Welshman is unavailable.

While the faith shown in usual right-back Walker-Peters further demonstrates Pochettino’s desire to promote youth at Tottenham, is this too risky a move?

Vertonghen is certainly a capable left-back having played there on numerous occasions throughout his career, but central defence remains his best position and moving him from that role would represent a further risk.

Of course this would only be in the scenario when Davies can’t play and if the North Londoners can receive £50m for a player who no longer has a future at the club in Rose, would they be foolish to turn it down?
