Leeds United had a game to forget on Sunday, as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday, and on reflection only one Whites players could leave the field with his head held high.
Samu Saiz did his best to lead by example, offering the only glimpse of quality from a Leeds side that were second best in every area of the field against an impressive Owls team.
Fresh off the back of a sobering defeat against Cardiff City just a few days earlier, Leeds needed to make a statement against Wednesday, proving their early season form against some of the Championship’s less impressive clubs was a precursor to bigger and better things.
Alas it was not to be, with Wednesday running out comfortable winners and Leeds looking well below their best.
As a consequence, it seems Saiz has already made himself indispensable to this Leeds squad, his attacking quality, eye for a pass and desire to keep playing the right way even when everything around him is going wrong impossible to ignore.
There have been questions over whether both Saiz and Pablo Hernandez can start in the same Leeds team against the bigger sides, especially away from home, but on this evidence the former should never be omitted if the Whites want the best chance of winning.
With six goals and two assists in his first 11 matches for Leeds, Saiz has quickly set about proving his worth. And now it seems he should be the first name on the team sheet.
