Tottenham fans were disappointed in January that their club did not win the battle with Chelsea for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

Chelsea paid just £15 million for the attacker, who has made next to no impact so far.

Spurs will not be feeling like they missed out given Barkley’s struggles for fitness – the 24-year-old has made only three appearances for the Blues.

Instead it is Barkley who could be feeling like he made a terrible mistake.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is battling to keep his job amid the club’s under-whelming league position, and if he leaves, and that can’t have been part of Barkley’s plan.

Barkley’s contract was set to expire this summer, and he could have had his pick of clubs if he held out.

The Times reported last summer how Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino had earmarked a spot in midfield for Barkley, as a long term successor to Mousa Dembele.

His decision to join Chelsea appears to be his loss, and not Tottenham’s, who will simply move on to other targets.

Seeing Spurs win 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last week will have made for uncomfortable viewing for Barkley, who will be wondering if he made the wrong decision.
