The Everton and Manchester United stars are in remarkably similar circumstances at their clubs.

Everton have something of a problem on their hands with Ross Barkley at this moment in time.
The midfielder was criticised by his manager last week after being taken off at half-time against Sunderland following a disappointing display.
He bounced back from that at the weekend with a solid display in the win over Middlesbrough as his side ran out 3-1 winners.
Tuesday evening saw him returning to that disappointing form as he put in another indifferent display in the EFL Cup loss to Norwich City at Goodison Park.

It leaves Everton with a big problem to try to resolve in a situation that is remarkably similar to the one surrounding Wayne Rooney at Manchester United.
At Goodison Park, the debate rages on about what Barkley’s best position is. He often lacks the creativity for the number 10 role but does not have the defensive discipline for centre midfield.
It is the same for Rooney at Old Trafford. United have better options in the number 10 role and his ability to play as a central midfielder is questionable.

There is also the manner in which they are affecting team performances. Both players’ poor form is not helping their respective teams.
The effect is more noticeable with Rooney and United but on current evidence both should be dropped for the sake of their teams moving forward.
The comparisons continue on the international stage where many feel Rooney should be dropped. Barkley failed to get into the last squad and both of their England futures are in doubt.
Of course, it is only early days in the season and both players have time to come back strongly, but at this moment in time the comparisons between Barkley and Rooney are remarkably similar.
