Is Wayne Rooney’s move from Manchester United to Everton just the prelude to another big deal between the two clubs?
Manchester United are agreeing to let Rooney leave on a free transfer.
It’s not strictly an act of generosity to their record signing, but more a way of getting his £250,000 per week wages off their books, but there is some goodwill involved too.
Exit… Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney
He will become the second player Everton have signed from United in recent months, following Morgan Schneiderlin in January.
But Rooney could be one of two transactions to take place this transfer window – if it sets the path for Romelu Lukaku to move in the opposite direction.
He is represented by Mino Raiola, who secured transfers to Old Trafford for Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic last summer.
Lukaku has also been spotted on holiday with Red Devils ace Pogba, The Metro report.
Everton’s Romelu Lukaku… set for exit?
Relations between Everton and Chelsea have been strained since the John Stones saga. Everton and Manchester United have no trouble doing business, as evidenced by the imminent Rooney deal.
The Sun reported at the weekend that Jose Mourinho wants Lukaku at United even if he signs Alvaro Morata, and the striker has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League.
The Rooney transfer could be just the appetiser for the major Manchester United and Everton deal yet to come.
