Signed by Rangers in January, Jason Cummings remains on loan at Ibrox until the end of the season.

Rangers’ improved form during the second half of the season under Graeme Murty has been attributed to his work in the January transfer window, bringing in a number of loan signings that have made the Gers a tenacious force once again.

Jamie Murphy has been perhaps the pick of the bunch, starring on the left wing and scoring five goals in 13 games – as well as adding seven assists. Sean Goss has impressed in glimpses in midfield, while Russell Martin adds experience.

But Jason Cummings – on loan from Nottingham Forest – has hardly had the chance to showcase his goalscoring pedigree with Alfredo Morelos preferred up front.

The Daily Record claim Rangers can sign the 22-year-old for £1million at the end of his loan, but is the former Hibernian striker really worth the seven-figure outlay after scoring just one goal in 10 league games?

Cummings was left on the bench for the first time since moving north of the border on Saturday, as Rangers strolled past Dundee with a comfortable 4-0 win – both Morelos and Murphy getting their name on the score sheet.

There is no doubt that Cummings can find the back of the net but he is simply not good enough to start for the Gers. With finances tight at Ibrox, surely saving £1million and spending it on other areas of the squad would be a smarter move.

The Gers need a new centre-back and perhaps another winger to rival the likes of Daniel Candeias and Murphy, meaning they must make their transfer budget stretch to improve options in different positions.

Splashing out £1million on a player that has struggled to have an impact at Ibrox is a move sideways. At such a figure, the Gers need to be improving their squad, and Cummings does not do that.
