Tottenham Hotspur have one of the best forwards in Europe but have struggled to sign a decent back-up in recent years.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane has continued his impressive trajectory with 38 goals in 45 matches this season and, while the likes of Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen have upped their respective games to play a major role for Spurs, the England international is still the go-to man up top.

A lack of injuries this season has meant Kane could lead the line in practically every game of note, rendering summer signing Fernando Llorente somewhat obsolete, just as Vincent Janssen was before him.

With the Spaniard tipped to leave Tottenham this summer, and Janssen’s future in doubt following a disappointing loan spell in Turkey, the same question is likely to surface: Who do Spurs sign as a viable alternative to Kane?

But the truth is, after the failed experiments involving Janssen and Llorente, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino may be better off saving money and promoting from within.

After all, as long as Kane is fit and available, he will be Tottenham’s undisputed number one striker, and allowing a youngster from Spurs’ academy to get the chances previously afforded to expensive flops would ensure a succession plan is in place.

It is not as if Tottenham are short of talented young forwards, with Kazaiah Sterling, Shayon Harrison and Reo Griffiths all on the books.

The latter is particularly impressive and, while only 17, he could follow a similar path to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford if given a chance.

With Son and Eriksen now taking more of the goal-scoring burden, and with other areas of the field in need of attention – especially if there are a few summer departures in North London – Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may be wise to keep his chequebook in his pocket rather than forking out for another disappointing forward for the third straight summer.
