Newcastle United youngster Adam Armstrong impressed in midweek, as he scored a brace for Blackburn Rovers in their victory over Portsmouth, but there has to be some concern that League One appears to be his level currently.

Armstrong tore England’s third division apart when he was playing for Coventry City as an 18-year-old, and there was great excitement about his future at St. James’ Park.

While there is still optimism that Armstrong could make it at Newcastle, it must be a concern that his best form seems to be coming at League One level.

There is no doubting that Armstrong is a standout talent for the division he is currently playing in with Blackburn, but two loan spells in the Championship are some cause for concern.

Armstrong has now played 56 times in the Championship, but only has seven goals to his name, which shows he still has some way to go before he is ready to start for Newcastle.

It would be foolish to write off Armstrong’s chances of making the grade at the Magpies yet, as he is still young and possesses a skill set which makes him a threat to defences.

But the fact that Armstrong is so prolific at League One level, yet not a regular scorer at the level above, is a slight worry.

And even if Armstrong continues to score at Blackburn this season, he will still have questions to answer about his ability to perform at higher levels in the future.
