Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Ivan Cavaleiro was reportedly on Newcastle United’s wishlist in the summer.
When Wolves signed Adama Traore in the summer, some of the Molineux faithful may have expected to see Ivan Cavaleiro given the green light to leave with the winger seemingly attracting plenty of attention.
The report noted that Cavaleiro’s future with the Championship title-holders was uncertain following Traore’s arrival and Wolves may have been tempted to sell.
And despite staying, his situation was probably not helped as he sustained an injury that led to the winger only making his first appearance of the season towards the end of September.
But Cavaleiro is now edging back towards full fitness, and based on some of his performances since returning, Nuno Espirito Santo will probably be delighted that Wolves did not allow the attacker to head to St James’ Park.
The Portuguese scored in the 2-0 win over Southampton in his first league appearance of the season, and he has now followed that up in his seventh game of the campaign by scoring an impressive goal in the weekend’s draw with Arsenal.
He does not appear to be back up to full speed – he is yet to spend longer than 62 minutes on the pitch this term – but he is showing a lot of quality already, and that could be an ominous sign for some of the sides that they face immediately after the international break.
With Wolves only scoring 12 league goals in their 12 games, Cavaleiro’s return to fitness and form could potentially provide Nuno’s men with a huge boost.
And unfortunately for Newcastle – whose own form has improved in the last two games – it would appear that their summer target may well end up being fully fit just in time for Wolves’ trip to Tyneside in early December.
