Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes received a straight red card in the Toon’s Carabao Cup semi-final win over Southampton. So, will the midfielder now be banned for the final?

The Magpies have secured their first appearance in a cup final since 1999 after beating the Saints 3-1 on aggregate. Joelinton handed Eddie Howe’s side a narrow advantage from the first-leg. But Sean Longstaff struck twice before Che Adams scored to settle the reverse tie.

Toon product Longstaff broke the deadlock inside the first five minutes at St James’ Park as the midfielder picked out the bottom corner. He then doubled the host’s lead at the end of a sweeping team move. Adams’ long-range strike would only prove to be a consolation effort.

But Newcastle’s night was not without a blemish as Guimaraes received a straight red card in the late stages. Referee Paul Tierney initially only showed the Brazilian a yellow card but upgraded it to a straight sending off following a VAR review of his tackle on Samuel Edozie.

The Saints star managed to nick the ball away from Guimaraes before the midfielder could plant his foot. In doing so, the Toon star’s foot came straight down on Edozie’s ankle after the ball had gone away. It was not a deliberate act to hurt Edozie but was a reckless tackle.

Is Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes now banned for the Carabao Cup final?

So, is Newcastle’s star midfielder Guimaraes now banned for the Carabao Cup final? Well, no. The Brazilian will serve a three-match suspension for the red card he received at home to Southampton. But the Wembley showpiece comes in four games’ time for the Magpies.

Newcastle will face either of Manchester United or Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup final on February 26. Although it is likely that Howe’s squad will meet the Red Devils as Erik ten Hag’s team have a 3-0 lead over Steve Cooper’s side following their semi-final first-leg.

The Toon will play three Premier League games before they travel to Wembley. While their home fixture with Brighton & Hove Albion (scheduled for February 25) will now need to be rescheduled. So, Guimaraes will not be banned for Newcastle come the Carabao Cup final.
