Jonjo Shelvey has been vital to Newcastle United’s success this season, but is he the best in the league?

As many expected, it’s been an excellent season so far for the Newcastle United faithful. Sat at the top of the Championship table, if only by one point, Rafa Benitez’s side look odds on to make a hasty return to the top flight of English football.
This has largely been down to the exceptional job their manager has done this season, rebuilding a side that looked broken and uninterested under Steve McClaren. The former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid man Benitez agreed to follow Newcastle down to the Championship this season, and has gotten his side playing some excellent attacking football.
One man that has really stood out amongst the pack though is Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. The former Swansea and Blackpool man, who joined the Magpies in January 2016, was one of the stand out performers for Newcastle United towards the tail end of their last season in the Premier League, but by that point the damage appeared to have been done under McClaren, as Benitez failed to save them from the drop.

However, in the Championship, Jonjo Shelvey has been able to show just how good he is once again, pulling the strings for Newcastle United from the centre of midfield, staking a claim as arguably the best playmaker in the division.
Scoring four goals and picking up seven assists so far, Shelvey has shown just how good he is, and is one of a number of players who are likely to play an important part in Newcastle United’s next season in the Premier League, should the Magpies find themselves promoted in the summer.
