Leeds United lost against Newcastle United in the Championship on Sunday.

Leeds United's Robert Green

Leeds United’s defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend cannot be solely blamed on Robert Green, but the goalkeeper did play a major role.

Green failed to collect a hopeful long ball, dropping it for Dwight Gayle to turn it home from just yards out.

That was in the 23rd minute, and Gayle added a second on 54 minutes to guide Newcastle to a 2-0 win in the Championship match at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper joined Leeds in the summer transfer window after leaving Queens Park Rangers at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

The Englishman is a good goalkeeper, but he is prone to making costly errors from time to time.

While a mistake from a goalkeeper is often given more coverage than a mistake from, say, a striker, Green’s error against Newcastle would have come as a positive for Marco Silvestri.

Silvestri is a very good custodian, but the Italian has also made some errors during his time at Leeds.

The 25-year-old has yet to make an appearance in the Championship this season, and he will surely want to get playing time.

Leeds head coach Garry Monk may not be willing to drop Green from the team for the match against Rotherham United this coming weekend, but Green cannot afford to make any more costly errors from now on.

The Whites may have lost to Newcastle, but Silvestri could prove to be the big winner, as it could have opened the door for him to claim back his place in the starting lineup.
