West Ham United youngster Declan Rice impressed in a central defensive role last term.

Manuel Pellegrini’s transfer plans may just suggest that he is looking at switching Declan Rice’s position for West Ham United next season.
Pellegrini has quickly set about improving West Ham’s defence since taking charge at the London Stadium.
The Daily Mail have reported how Issa Diop and Alfie Mawson are both close to joining the Hammers, while the Metro have claimed that Chris Smalling is on their wishlist.

If West Ham do bring in all three defenders, then Rice’s place in the starting line-up will surely be under threat, particularly if he stays at centre-back.
But it may be that Pellegrini is lining the 18-year-old up for a role in central midfield.

Rice has shown through his performances for the Republic of Ireland that he can thrive in a more advanced role.
And with West Ham needing to add quality in the centre of the pitch, Pellegrini may view Rice as a good option to use in the position.
