West Ham United boss Manuel Pellegrini has told Javier Hernandez that he’ll be a key player this season.

It could be extremely difficult for West Ham United boss Manuel Pellegrini to keep his promise to Javier Hernandez, if he signs Moussa Marega.

The Daily Mail claim that West Ham want Marega from Porto, as Pellegrini looks to bring in another striker.

However, by doing so, he surely risks ostracising Hernandez.

Pellegrini spoke this week, suggesting that he has told Hernandez that he will be a key player for West Ham over the upcoming campaign.

He said to the Daily Star: “I spoke with Javier before he played at the World Cup.

“When I signed here, I told him that he would be a very important player here with me.”

Hernandez struggled for game time towards the back end of last season, which was his first at the London Stadium following a £16 million move last summer.

There were hopes that with Pellegrini in charge Hernandez would play more regularly, but that seems highly unlikely if Marega arrives.

Marega would be a costly signing for West Ham, and could immediately leapfrog Hernandez in the pecking order.

With Marko Arnatuovic now unquestionably West Ham’s first choice forward, it would be hard to see exactly where Hernandez now fits in with the Hammers.

And signing Marega may mean that Pellegrini struggles to keep his promise to the Mexican forward.
