The reportedly frustrated Liverpool defender is set to face Arsenal, a club he’s been linked to in recent days.

Joe Gomez looks set to return to Liverpool’s first XI for tonight’s visit of Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp is missing Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk will be rested in what’s expected to be a much-changed Reds team for this evening’s League Cup clash with the Gunners at Anfield.

Goal.com reported that Gomez will to be one of the changes and, interestingly, could it strengthen Arsenal’s reported desire to sign him if he impresses?

According to 90 Min, the 22-year-old defender is ‘frustrated’ over his lack of regular football under Klopp and the North Londoners ‘would happily’ offer him an escape route to the capital in January.

Gomez is seemingly desperate to make up for lost time following an injury-ravaged first few years on Merseyside after being signed by Brendan Rodgers in 2015.

Thing is, Matip has arguably been Liverpool’s best player and, when fit, the Cameroon international is definitely Klopp’s first choice, alongside Van Dijk.

Leaving makes sense for Gomez and a swoop definitely makes sense for Arsenal who, despite an overhaul in defence since Arsene Wenger’s departure, Unai Emery’s side continue to leak goals.

In 10 Premier League games, Arsenal have conceded 14 goals – one less than Newcastle United in 17th place.

Emery needs to shore things up back there in the January window and, if Gomez dazzles tonight, that could only make the former Charlton starlet more appealing to the Emirates Stadium club.
