Celtic are linked to Lewis Morgan – but should they be aiming higher?
Celtic are keen on signing St Mirren midfielder Lewis Morgan, according to The Mail.
Morgan is a bright talent, having represented Scotland at youth level, and at just 21, he has plenty of scope to kick on and improve further.
But big questions exist over whether Morgan is good enough to make an impact at Celtic right now.
Celtic are unbeaten in domestic football over the past season and a half, and breaking into their team will not be easy, with competition for places in midfield tough.
It is in Europe however where there are bigger doubts over Morgan.
Celtic scraped into the Europa League, finishing third in their Champions League group after winning one game and losing the other five.
Fierce debate has ensued over whether Celtic have actually improved on last year.
The gulf in class between Celtic and the bigger European clubs has been stark, and signing Morgan would not redress that.
Celtic need to be signing players who will help them compete, and make an impression in the upcoming Europa League.
Morgan does not have the pedigree to suggest he will help them bridge the gap, and Brendan Rodgers needs to think very carefully about making a move.
Their competitors for Morgan’s signature are English Championship side Nottingham Forest – who are not exactly PSG or Bayern Munich.
That should be a warning sign that Morgan isn’t what Celtic need right now.
