According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Arsenal are looking to sign Leicester City star Wilfred Ndidi in the summer.

The Nigerian defensive midfielder has also attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, but it is Arsenal who would surely benefit the most from his acquisition.

The Gunners are in desperate need of a ball-winner and someone who can generally offer some solidity in the middle of the pitch, particularly after selling Francis Coquelin to Valencia in January.

Aaron Ramsey, while proving himself to be reliable part of the team, is more of a box-to-box midfielder, and neither Mohammed Elneny or Granit Xhaka have managed to provide the anchor the team needs.

At just 21 years of age, Wilfred Ndidi can be the man to fill that gap in Arsenal’s midfield.

He has largely impressed for Leicester this season, proving himself to be a strong defensive presence in the side.

His mightily impressive average of 4.2 tackles a game significantly dwarfs Elneny and Xhaka’s record of 0.9 and 1.9 respectively.

Ndidi also makes more interceptions per game and is far more competent in the air, an area in which Arsenal need to improve.

It is this lack of a reliable ball-winner that has rendered the Gunners’ midfield so weak in recent seasons, but in Ndidi they may have found the solution to the problem.

And with the futures of Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere still in doubt, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger should be eager to add a midfielder with the potential to become a regular starter.
