Leeds have given young goalkeeper Will Huffer a professional deal.
Leeds United have placed their faith in 19-year-old goalkeeper Will Huffer by handing him a professional contract until the end of the season, with the option to extend it for a further 12 months.
Leeds confirmed Huffer’s new deal on their official website, as the youngster continues to shine in between the sticks for Carlos Corberan’s Under-23 side. It has even seen him called up to represent England’s Under-18’s.
In what is a slightly surprising move to hand a player almost out of his teens a professional deal, as well as the length of the contract being so short, should it be ringing alarm bells inside Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s head?
The latter signed a new contract at Elland Road just weeks after Thomas Christiansen joined Leeds as Garry Monk’s replacement, which sees the lofty stopper remain in Yorkshire until 2020.
However, Peacock-Farrell is now 21 years of age and has made just one senior appearance for Leeds. He remains third choice behind Andy Lonergan and Felix Wiedwald and struggled to make an impression on loan at York this term.
He spent a month at Leeds’ neighbours, but in four matches he conceded nine goals and surely Huffer’s new deal shows that Christiansen simply does not trust Peacock-Farrell, preferring Huffer to the former Middlesbrough youth player?
Due to their differences in age, faith should be given to Huffer especially after his contract renewal as he boasts more time for development and improvement. It would be interesting to see who Christiansen picks, if Lonergan or Wiedwald or unavailable.
Peacock-Farrell needs to leave on loan anyway as he remains third choice, and with three years remaining on his current deal, dropping into fourth place would surely see Christiansen question his future at the club.
