The Tottenham Hotspur youngster is currently on loan at Aston Villa.
When Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Josh Onomah headed on loan to Aston Villa earlier this year, it seemed the ideal move for all concerned.
The player needed to feature regularly, Tottenham wanted to see what he was capable of as more than just a late arrival from the bench, and Villa needed more quality as they bid to make it second time lucky in terms of Championship promotion.
The 20-year-old got some early starts, yet despite looking promising he was unable to prevent Villa’s alarming slump, and it is only in his absence that Steve Bruce’s side have rediscovered the form that could take them back into the Premier League come May.
Fatigue leading to minor injury saw Onomah miss Villa’s game against Middlesbrough, and since then he has had to make do with a place on the bench, coming on in the second half against Barnsley, Nottingham Forest, Burton Albion and Bolton Wanderers.
Villa won all four matches, and while Onomah got a late goal in the 4-0 win over Burton, Bruce has seemingly settled on a starting XI – and certainly a midfield combination – that is right for this division.
Unfortunately for the Tottenham youngster, he is not part of it, and although he still definitely has a role to play, it could be a bit-part contribution between now and May.
That is still more than he could have hoped for at Tottenham, where the strength in depth means Onomah would have had to make do with a few brief outings in the league and a couple of cup matches. But Villa are a different beast to the one of just a few short weeks ago, and their loanee may have to refine his expectations despite his impressive start.
