The Tottenham Hotspur youngster has struggled for regular game time thus far.

England's Josh Onomah celebrates scoring their third goal

In an exclusive interview with the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Josh Onomah has explained his hopes for next season, with the 20-year-old seeing the Under-20 World Cup as the perfect opportunity to impress his manager Mauricio Pochettino.

But despite aiming to kick off far more matches next season and beyond, is Onomah fighting a losing battle?

After all, while Harry Winks has looked a class act whenever he has played for Tottenham’s first-team, Onomah has flattered to deceive more often than not, and given the strength in depth at Spurs and the likelihood of new arrivals this summer, his opportunities could be few and far between.

“Football is all about setting new goals and overcoming challenges,” Onomah told the Sun. “And mine at the moment is to win the World Cup and then step up at Tottenham and try to become a regular starter.”

It is an admirable and understandable dream. However, on the 32 occasions he has experienced first-team action, Onomah has rarely shone and one goal and no assists is an uninspiring return.

Some Tottenham fans feel Onomah’s chances should have instead gone to Nathan Oduwa prior to the winger’s exit, with the former failing to prove his worth thus far.

That could change, and he is of course very young. The problem is Tottenham have a whole raft of burgeoning talent eager for their chance and 32 appearances into their own senior careers, they will be hoping to have done a lot more than Onomah has managed.

The England under-20 international may be dreaming of a regular place in the Tottenham first-team, but a bit-part role in the cup competitions may be the best he can hope for over the next few campaigns.
