Graeme Murty’s impressive start to life as Rangers’ interim boss owed much to the fine form of Jason Holt, who came in from the cold to deliver some outstanding performances following Pedro Caixinha’s dismissal.
Those showings earned the 24-year-old Rangers’ Player of the Month award for October. However he came back to Earth with a bump on Saturday, failing to impress in the 2-0 defeat to Hamilton Academical.
That outing had some Rangers fans calling for the midfielder to be dropped, suggesting this was the real player rather than the one who had been seen prior to the international break, and one wonders if Holt will chalk this off as a blip or if he is destined to be remembered as an unfulfilled talent at Ibrox.
The feeling that Holt bottles it as soon as he comes up against any type of aggression remains, but it would be foolish to ignore his performances against Hearts and Partick Thistle.
He bossed those games and has not forgotten how to play to that level in a matter of weeks, and it is up to whoever takes charge of Rangers permanently to coach the best out of the 24-year-old.
He is still a couple of years away from his peak and, while he will always have his critics, the Rangers player has made a substantial case for regular inclusion between now and May.
The upcoming clash with Dundee will go some way to showing if Holt can play well more often than not, and from there anything is possible.
