The Tottenham Hotspur defender is back and they look far better for it.

Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen warms up before the match

Tottenham Hotspur looked back to their best in their FA Cup fifth round victory against Fulham on Sunday.

Spurs ran out 3-0 winners courtesy of a Harry Kane hat-trick but the England international was not the only player to impress.

Harry Winks also looked brilliant in the centre of the park while further back, the importance of Jan Vertonghen should not be understated.

The Belgian international missed six matches through injury, in which time Spurs won just twice, one of which was a 4-3 victory against Wycombe Wanderers where Tottenham’s defence was breached with alarming ease.

Defeats to Liverpool and Gent suggested the bubble may be about to burst for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, yet they looked a completely different proposition with Vertonghen at the back against Fulham.

While Toby Alderweireld is rightly praised to high Heaven by Tottenham fans and pundits alike, his usual defensive partner is sometimes overlooked, at least by neutrals.

Now he is back, expect Tottenham to look far more solid and continue to challenge on three fronts in the weeks ahead.
