Tavernier has been excellent going forward for Rangers, but there are question marks at the back.

Steven Gerrard has a tricky selection ahead of him on Thursday as Rangers travel to Russia to face FC Ufa in the second leg of their Europa League play-off clash, ahead of Sunday’s clash against Celtic.
Gerrard will be desperate to guide Rangers into the group stage of the Europa League, but will also be wary that he needs to field a side capable of fighting against their Old Firm rivals just three days later.
It is likely to see a handful of changes from the 3-3 draw against Motherwell, but one player that could be at risk of losing his starting spot could be captain James Tavernier.
The 27-year-old right-back struggled against Motherwell on Sunday and although he provided an assist for Kyle Lafferty’s second goal, he was described as “horrendous” by BBC Sportscene pundit Michael Stewart for his defending.
He was at fault for two of Motherwell’s goals, firstly losing Carl McHugh who headed home The Well’s second before Peter Hartley left Tavernier before tapping home in the 94th minute.
His lapses in concentration not only cost Rangers two vital points in the table, but also reinforces the belief in fans and perhaps Gerrard’s mind that Tavernier can certainly attack – but struggles when defending.

Against Ufa, Rangers have a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg. In Russia, the Gers will be expected to fight tooth and nail to hold onto their narrow lead, and will need an excellent defensive display in their bid for the group stage.
Surely then, Gerrard could consider dropping Tavernier after Sunday’s display with the mindset likely to be a defensive one. With Borna Barisic ineligible, dropping Tavernier would see Jon Flanagan go to right-back and Andy Hallidat at left-back.
