Tottenham Hotspur are said to want James Maddison from Leicester City.

Tottenham Hotspur supporters should be concerned if James Maddison is genuinely being lined up as Christian Eriksen’s replacement.

The Daily Mirror claim that Tottenham could move for Leicester City’s Maddison if Eriksen does depart in the summer, with Mauricio Pochettino a big fan.

It is easy to see why the Spurs boss rates Maddison highly too, as he has been a revelation since moving to the Premier League.

The England youth international possesses a great range of pass, can finish and has the trickery to beat a man.

However, there has to be question marks over whether he is anywhere near Eriksen’s level right now.

Eriksen has been moulded into one of the finest playmakers in the Premier League over the years at Spurs.

The Dane is the heartbeat of the Tottenham side, with many of their attacks going through him.

While Maddison could be an attractive signing for Spurs, he would surely be a downgrade on Eriksen right now.

With the likes of Isco or Thiago Alcantara potentially available, Tottenham would have far more proven players they could go after to replace Eriksen.

If they were to bring in Maddison, it would be hard to not feel that Tottenham were downgrading, rather than improving.

With Spurs challenging for titles, the last thing Pochettino’s side need to do is take a step backwards.

And although Maddison is clearly a very bright talent, who has an excellent future, Spurs should be looking for a player who can step in and replace Eriksen immediately, if he does leave.
