The Celtic left-back could be under threat following the 18-year-old’s impressive recent displays.
Kieran Tierney’s impressive form at Celtic is good news for everyone at Parkhead – except for maybe one man.
Indeed, Emilio Izaguirre could slowly be fazed out by Ronny Deila if Tierney continues to deliver.
On current form, the teenager is surely ahead of Izaguirre. And not because he has been marginally better than the Honduran – but because Izaguirre has been poor for some time.
Struggling to perform, the 29-year-old will now face added pressure following an incredible series of displays from Tierney.
Could it give Deila the perfect opportunity to seriously consider Izaguirre’s future?
Celtic fans have often been critical of the left-back and, now that a credible alternative has presented himself, Tierney could replace Izaguirre long term.
He is only 18, of course, so he shouldn’t be overhyped this early in his career.
But being a teenager doesn’t stop you from staking a claim for a regular first-team berth. And, if Tierney makes the transition, Deila won’t need Izaguirre – he’ll simply need a back-up left-back. One on less wages and one who will be happy to settle for less game time.
That could open up the possibility of Izaguirre leaving Celtic if he isn’t happy with being replaced by Tierney. Right now, though, can anyone definitely not see it happening in the long run?
