Tottenham star has not featured for months.
Tottenham’s Erik Lamela reacts
As Tottenham Hotspur take on Everton this weekend the fixture should offer a reminder of the North London side’s forgotten man.
The two sides met on the opening day of the season and Tottenham’s goalscorer was winger Erik Lamela, who scored a header to deny Ronald Koeman a flying start as Everton boss.
Lamela was impressive the entire game, and added a danger to the club’s attack which has been sorely lacking at times over the past few months.
The Argentine has not featured since October, having been ruled out with a hip injury.
He returned to Rome to undergo treatment on it in January, but as we reach March he still appears some way short of a comeback.
One month ago head coach Mauricio Pochettino told the Evening Standard he was feeling positive about the winger returning soon, but fans are still waiting.
The reliable Premierinjuries.com note Lamela’s current status as ‘making progress’, with no date set for even a return to full training, let alone first team action.
At this stage there is a very real possibility which has to be acknowledged that Tottenham may not see Lamela in action again this season.
Tottenham have coped relatively well without him, sitting in second in the Premier League, but their European form was dismal.
If Spurs do not get him back this season, then question marks will continue to hover over him heading into next season, potentially affecting the club’s transfer plans.
