Should Manchester United consider Javier Hernandez this summer?

Manchester United will be looking to strengthen this summer and finding an alternative to Romelu Lukaku is going to become a priority.

Lukaku is the team’s top scorer with more than 25 in all competitions, but only 15 have come in the Premier League, showing he can’t do it all on his own.

Back-up forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been released, and a smart move would be to try and re-sign Javier Hernandez from West Ham.

Hernandez has recently expressed exasperation at being on the bench for the Hammers, but to rejoin United this is potentially a fate he would accept.

‘Chicharito’ has an almost equal minutes per goal rate as Romelu Lukaku, with the Mexican making the most of his time on the pitch at West Ham.

Hernandez would arguably have even more goals if he was playing at Old Trafford in a team which creates more chances, and he is an ideal ‘fill-in’ for Lukaku.

It was a little surprising United didn’t go in for him last summer after Jose Mourinho raved about him.

Mourinho told ESPN “In the way we play at Old Trafford, in the way we dominate opponents, in the way we play in the box, I think Chicharito would have scored 20 goals easy.

“Even coming from the bench for the last 10 or 20 minutes, he would have 20 goals. He is the guy that naturally the ball comes here, rebound here, rebounds there, boom, goal.”

Lukaku’s decent but modest league goalscoring form this season has shown there is a need for another out and out striker at United, but not necessarily one who would displace the Belgian or put his position under threat long-term.

Chicharito fits the bill and while he has been inconsistent at West Ham, his overall record stands up well, and United should consider bringing him ‘home’.
