Manchester United striker James Wilson is in demand with The Blades the latest Championship side interest – but Wolverhampton Wanderers don’t seem keen.
With Sheffield United winless in their last four Championship fixtures, the January transfer window could not have come at a better time with manager Chris Wilder possibly needing to shake up his squad.
According to The Mail, Wilder has identified a new striker as a useful addition in the New Year despite being able to call upon Billy Sharp, Clayton Donaldson and the red-hot Leon Clarke.
It is understood that Manchester United youngster James Wilson, who has already stated that he would be keen to leave Old Trafford on loan for more regular game time, is an option that Wilder is considering for the New Year.
Sheffield United are far from the only side who have been linked, The Sun claiming that Leeds and Reading were interested.
But despite Wolves’ desperate need for a striker to support lone frontman Leo Bonatini, the Championship leaders are yet to throw their hat into the ring. The question is; why?
Well, perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo wants a striker with a proven track record in the Championship, according to the Birmingham Mail. Wolves have been linked with Lewis Grabban, Chris Martin and Dwight Gayle – three players who have been prolific at this level in the recent past.
But while Wilson isn’t short of Championship experience, he has never really made his mark in the second tier. A loan spell at Brighton in 2015/16 produced just five goals in 25 games while a temporary move to Derby County last season was cut short thanks to a serious injury – before Wilson had even opened his account for The Rams.
Wolves need a striker, Wilson looks available – but perhaps the 21-year-old simply isn’t the right man for the job.
