A number of senior Rangers players have departed Ibrox since Pedro Caixinha took over in March.
There’s little room for sentiment at Pedro Caixinha’s Rangers. Therefore, no matter how impressive Jason Holt was during the Portuguese manager’s first few months in charge at Ibrox, that counts for nothing now.
The hard-working Holt became one of the first names on the team-sheet when Caixinha replaced Mark Warburton in the spring. Though as soon as the 46-year-old started bringing in his own players, the former Hearts midfielder found himself slipping down the pecking order.
With Graham Dorrans, Niko Kranjcar, Carlos Pena and Ryan Jack all arriving in the summer or recovering from injury, Holt has made just one Scottish Premiership appearance all season – a 35 minute cameo against Hamilton last Friday with the win already in the bag.
No wonder he’s feeling frustrated.
“It’s never nice not playing, but I’ve always been there and thereabouts with the squad, constantly training hard and just looking to impress the gaffer and try to get back in the team.”
As Rob Kiernan, Andy Halliday or Harry Forrester would undoubtedly testify, however, Caixinha is not one to change his mind. The aforementioned trio all found themselves out of favour and were shipped out at the first opportunity after losing their place in the squad.
It would be little surprise, then, if Holt faces a January exit with Caixinha preferring at least four or five rival midfielders in his position.
One of Caixinha’s favourite players upon his arrival, it now feels that the 24-year-old’s future lies elsewhere.
