Glasgow Rangers brought Glenn Middleton to Ibrox in January and he has made a big impression.

It may have been a pretty dreadful end to the season for Rangers, but there was one piece of business that the Gers did in January that looks to be an absolute masterstroke: the deal to sign Glenn Middleton from Norwich.

Middleton signed on an initial deal that is set to run until 2020, according to the club’s official website, but the impact that he has made during the first few months at Ibrox should arguably leave the Light Blues considering whether it is already time to offer Middleton fresh terms.

The winger is regularly making a crucial impact for the development side. He has scored a number of goals and is regularly coming away from games having contributed at least one or two assists.

In the wake of Rangers’ latest defeat to Celtic, it would really not be received particularly poorly amongst the Ibrox faithful if he was given a chance in the first-team before the campaign concludes – even if he is looking to rival Jamie Murphy or Daniel Candeias, who have arguably been two of the club’s better performers in recent months.

Middleton is definitely catching the eye. And while the Gers have plenty of security and time before they will have to think about his contract situation, the Light Blues should undoubtedly consider rewarding him for the brilliant start that he has made, and extend his deal by another couple of years while they are at it.

If Middleton continues to progress at his current rate, Rangers could have a special player on their hands and letting his deal run into its final two years automatically becomes a gamble.

The 18-year-old should arguably not be rushed into the first-team – though a chance before the end of the season may be warranted – but he is arguably the most exciting prospect coming through in an academy that is showing promise all over the field. Rangers therefore, should look to be proactive and reward Middleton for his very bright start at the club.
