A number of Premier League heavyweights want Ajax’s Frenkie De Jong, but is it inevitable that Tottenham Hotspur will join the race?

So would it be out of the question to suggest that it is almost inevitable that Spurs will join their Premier League rivals in the race to sign the youngster?
De Jong has been exceptional in the middle of the park this season, making eight appearances in the Eredivisie and featuring on a couple of occasions as a substitute in the Champions League – he also played the final eight minutes of last season’s Europa League final (alongside Spurs summer signing Davinson Sanchez).

With Tottenham watching the youngster’s team closely currently, it is likely that Mauricio Pochettino would have been informed of De Jong’s ability and potential.
And although Sky Sports’ report last month did not name him amongst the targets that Tottenham were considering, the fact that he is likely to be available for such a small fee surely makes him an extremely appealing target.
Paying £5 million for a 20-year-old undoubtedly has the potential to be a massive bargain, and thus, Spurs should not allow their top flight rivals to land him without making a move of their own.
And with Pochettino making it abundantly clear that the path to the first-team is there for anyone in his squad, it would not be a surprise if De Jong liked the look of a move to Wembley if Tottenham did enter the race.
