Huddersfield have not won since the second game of the season and scored just one goal. Is that a concern or are they just missing Steve Mounie?

Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 defeat to Swansea City in the Premier League means they have now scored just one goal and picked up three points from their last six games.

After winning their first two matches following promotion to the top flight for the first time since 1972 this is something of a decline in form, although they still remain in 12th position in the table.

With Manchester United at home and then Liverpool away their next two fixtures it doesn’t get any easier for David Wagner’s men and after the joy of going up from the Championship, is reality starting to set in?

Perhaps it is too soon to dismiss the Terriers just yet, but against the Swans there was a sense that their intense pressing system under Wagner is already starting to show signs of fatigue.

Five goals in eight outings is also a worrying statistic, with only bottom two Crystal Palace and Bournemouth having scored fewer in 2017/18 – yet the absence of Steve Mounie does have to be taken into consideration.

Mounie scored twice on his debut in the 3-0 victory at Palace and although failed to find the net in the following three games, was a clear focal point in attack that was perhaps lacking the support as opposed to the ability as a number nine.

However, the 23-year-old has not played since September 11 due to a heel injury and although his replacement upfront, Laurent Depoitre, has scored Huddersfield’s only goal since then, the Belgian lacks the same impetus.

Luckily for Wagner, Mounie is expected back soon and perhaps only then should it be determined whether the Yorkshire side should be concerned about their future in the division or not.
