Is Houssem Aouar playing for Algeria? Many Algerians have asked this on Google amid rumours of the France international changing allegiance.
The Lyon No.8 has already received one cap for the French national team under Didier Deschamps, so many have wondered if he is able to represent Algeria.
Now, there has been an interesting update.
So, is Aouar playing for Algeria? Let’s take a look…
Is Houssem Aouar playing for Algeria?
Well, according to Djahid Zefizef – President of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) – Aouar will play for Algeria.
As quoted by DZ Foot, Zefizef said: “Houssem Aouar has given us his agreement to join the Algerian selection.”
Zefizef added that he is also in talks with Rennes striker Amine Gouiri in regards to linking up with the Algeria national team, a player who has only represented France at youth level so far.
Like Aouar, Gouiri was born in France, but is of Algerian descent.

Luckily for Algeria, Aouar’s one game for France was not a competitive fixture.
The 24-year-old represented France in a friendly against Ukraine back in October 2020, registering two assists in a 7-2 win.
Had it been a competitive fixture, such as a World Cup qualifier for example, then Aouar would have been forced to stick with France.
It comes after Zefizef also convinced Rayan Aït Nouri to join the Algeria national team, who – like Gouiri – has represented France at youth level, but is yet to play for the senior side.
Aouar could make his debut for Algeria very soon, if the paperwork can be finalised in time.
Algeria take on Libya in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday 13th January.
