Is Havard Nordtveit’s passing ability enough to save his West Ham career?

The West Ham United midfielder is neat and tidy on the ball but what else does he do?

For much of the first hour against Liverpool, West Ham United midfielder Havard Nordtveit did exactly what was asked of him, keeping the ball moving and almost invariably finding a Hammers teammate.

Not that Sunday’s match is one the summer signing will want to remember, with West Ham losing 4-0 courtesy of a Philippe Coutinho brace and additional goals from Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi.

Nordtveit was quickly dubbed a flop at the London Stadium after being played out of position at right-back, and some impressive performances in his more natural position later in the campaign saw the doubters diminish.

The question is: Does an impressive eye for a pass warrant a prolonged spell at the club?

Against Liverpool, Nordtveit had a passing accuracy of 94 per cent, but he did little else all game.

Two tackles and three duels won is okay; but it is nothing to write home about. Certainly not for a central midfielder paid to do just that.

With no key passes to set up goal-scoring chances for a teammate, Nordtveit did the easy stuff well but avoided the killer pass.

Only time will tell if West Ham manager Slaven Bilic will keep him on next season, but much will depend on who is in the squad to benefit from that impressive passing.
