Rangers bringing Lucas Leiva to Ibrox could change the face of clashes against Celtic.
Rangers’ desire for full scale changes have been hastened by their embarrassing defeats against Celtic over the past month, losing 4-0 and 5-0.
The Gers were dominated by a midfield led by the irrepressible Scott Brown, who has found a new lease of life under Brendan Rodgers.
Working out a strategy to stop Brown is the key to competing with Celtic, and Rangers might have already identified a player who has a chance.
Leiva, 31, has matched up against the English Premier League’s finest midfielders over the past decade, including Yaya Toure, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes.
He will respect Brown but he will not be intimidated by the Celtic midfielder like Rangers’ lacklustre midfield earlier this season.
This is not to say Lucas will be able to stop Celtic single handedly, but he is a player Gerrard has been in the trenches with himself, going into battle alongside him on countless occasions and it makes sense he would want him as a leader in the Rangers midfield.
Lucas’ arrival at Ibrox would give Rangers a midfielder capable of effectively challenging Brown, and this alone will set the tone for a rejuvenated and more competitive Gers side next season.
