Leeds United player Eunan O’Kane may still have some critics at Elland Road, regularly questioning why he is included ahead of either Liam Bridcutt or Ronaldo Vieira, but on recent evidence the Republic of Ireland international has become the Whites’ most consistent midfielder.

Ronaldo Vieira was rested for Leeds’ clash with Birmingham City last week, while skipper Liam Bridcutt has looked out of sorts for a while now, but through all that O’Kane has quietly gone about his job.

He now appears to have made himself indispensable to Garry Monk’s side, especially given the need to balance the use of Vieira and with Bridcutt needing to shake off his own malaise.

O’Kane was replaced shortly before the hour-mark against Birmingham City, with Kalvin Phillips impressing in his place, but for weeks now O’Kane has been proving his worth and with Leeds relatively short of numbers in that key area, he is the player who has responded more often than not with solid performances.

It may be unfashionable to say so, and in time Vieira will take that mantle, but for now O’Kane does appear to be Leeds’ most important and effective midfielder.
