Derby County loanee has had a fast start, which plays into Leeds United’s hands.
Lewis Baker showed his quality for Leeds United last night with a driving run which set up the team’s second goal.
It was a piece of impressive play from the midfielder, who has been highly rated for years at Chelsea, but has not quite made the breakthrough.
Baker, 23, is in the last chance saloon with Chelsea, and it may be that whatever he does at Leeds, it won’t be good enough.
A principle reason for this is the emergence of Mason Mount, who is starring for Derby.
Mount, 19, is Chelsea’s ‘next big thing’, a tag once bestowed on Baker.
While Baker has failed to make the most of his loan spells, succeeding with just one out of four, Mount looks like going two for two.
He impressed with Vitesse last season, where Baker once did, and now at Derby he has scored two goals in his opening three games.
Playing under the tutelage of former Chelsea star Frank Lampard, Mount looks a surefire bet to hit double figures for the Rams already, and there have even been whispers of an England call up.
Next season Chelsea will need to think about giving him a chance, but there are limited spots in a team pushing for the top place in the Premier League.
If he gets the nod, it will push Baker closer to the exit door, and make it easier for Leeds to sign the attacking midfielder permanently.
Based on his debut this week against Bolton, that is an exciting prospect for the Whites.
