Wolves were reportedly open for offers for Danny Batth in the summer and it appears he is running out of time at Molineux. Sheffield Wednesday could certainly do with such a player.
You can’t help but feel a little sorry for Danny Batth.
The Wolves academy graduate has been plying his trade at Molineux since 2010, he captained the club to promotion from League One and, in total, has made over 200 appearances with the gold crest on his shirt. But with Wolves embarking on the most exciting era in the club’s recent history, it appears that Batth could be a victim of their success.
Thanks to the contacts of Jorge Mendes and the funds of Chinese ownership, Wolves brought in a raft of defensive additions over the summer, the brilliant Willy Boly (below) and vastly underrated Ryan Bennett the pick of the bunch. Former Rio Ave defender Roderick Miranda would also arguably walk into most sides in the Championship.
Batth, however, has found opportunities harder to come by. He’s started nine of 19 Championship games and has not been seen at all since Wolves’ shock 2-1 loss at QPR a month ago – the club’s most recent defeat in all competitions.
Batth, despite his long-running allegiance to the club, has never been an undisputed fans favourite but even his biggest critics will surely express some sympathy as it appears that the club has moved beyond him.
Out of the Batthtub
If Wolves were to listen to offers, and The Express and Star claimed they were in the summer, Batth would not be short of options. Leeds were linked then and could still do with further defensive depth.
And Sheffield Wednesday, for instance, are crying out for cover at the back with Carlos Carvalhal having just Glenn Loovens and Tom Lees to pick from for most of this season. Batth, a powerful defender blessed with real leadership qualities, has the potential to be the man Wednesday are crying out for.
Batth would want nothing more than to lead Wolves to the Premier League – but you wonder whether he will be denied this chance.
