Leeds United’s Championship prospects have been hit by a crisis – and Celtic’s Scottish Premiership champions De Vries must be under consideration.
Leeds United have been plunged into a goalkeeping crisis with Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Jamal Blackman (above) both out of Saturday’s clash with Bristol City.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds have applied to the EFL to bring in a shot-stopper on an emergency loan deal with only rookie youngsters Will Huffer and Kamil Miazek at the disposal of head coach Marcelo Bielsa.
But even if Leeds get through their game against Bristol City without a senior goalkeeper, surely a new stopper is a must in the January transfer window now that a broken leg has ruled Chelsea loanee Blackman out for the season.
Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to demand the likes of Fraser Forster, David Stockdale and Kieren Westwood in recent days – but one name who has not been mentioned just yet is Dorus de Vries.
The Dutchman, however, ticks a lot of boxes and should be under consideration. The 37-year-old is hugely experienced when it comes to Championship football, after all, having earned promotion with Swansea City in 2011 before spending time at Wolves and Nottingham Forest.
Furthermore, De Vries is renowned for his ability to pass the ball out from the back, making him a perfect fit for Bielsa’s infamous possession-heavy style.
With the veteran ‘keeper clearly the third choice at current club Celtic, and with his contract due to expire next summer, the Scottish Premiership champions surely wouldn’t stand in his way if he wanted to leave in the New Year.
One to think about for Leeds then.
