Tottenham Hotspur have arguably the best left-back in the country in the shape of Danny Rose, so it is no surprise that whenever the England international is missing, Spurs fans worry.

However, while his detractors remain Ben Davies has steadily improved since replacing his injured teammate in the starting line-up, and he has impressed in the role of left wing-back in Tottenham’s new look defence.

There will always be those who are critical of the Welsh international, if only because he is not Rose, but just as Kieran Trippier has excelled at times on the right flank, Davies is doing his best on the opposite side of the pitch.

It is credit to Davies that he is happy to bide his time at Tottenham and he almost invariably does a decent if underwhelming job.

He is not the buccaneering left-back Spurs fans see whenever Rose takes to the field, but he is an ever reliable option for Mauricio Pochettino and the more games he plays, the more consistent he will become.

There is always a player at every club who the fans love to chastise and at Tottenham – aside from the obvious Moussa Sissoko – Davies may be that man.

The fact that it does not let him bother him speaks volumes about his character and his importance to the team.
